Suicide Information and Intervention
  The Center for Disease Control has recommended “Gatekeeper” training as its top priority in a national mission to reduce America’s suicide rate. “Gatekeepers,” or first finders, are those people who, because of their contact with those at risk of suicide, are often in the best position to identify and refer people thinking about suicide for help. This training is designed to enhance general awareness about suicide through public education, teach the warning signs of suicidal thinking and behavior, and to teach basic investigation skills that can help avert the tragedy of suicide.  7 CEU

Lindsay Palmer is a community educator and specialist with the King County Sexual Assault Resource Center. She has been teaching classes and workshops at BCC since 1991. She is a wonderfully gifted adult experiential learning instructor providing useable tools to participants and a great resource for participants who are working with patients who have issues related to sexual trauma. Lindsay is also offering another workshop this quarter on how to work with patients experiencing feelings of anger and resentment while in the treatment process and how to prepare patients with the skills to cope with emotions of this kind in the recovery process.

Anger Management
This workshop is designed to provide practical information for working with individuals who manifest problems with anger. Participants will have opportunities to role play various strategies and study different models developed to help clients learn how to express anger appropriately.
Students will be able to immediately put into practice effective strategies for working with youth and adults. 7 CEU

CDP Exam Review
This workshop is designed as an overview of the knowledge base for the alcoholism and drug abuse counseling profession; specifically for individuals wanting to prepare for certification exams.  Developed by the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors, the teaching modules of this workshop include pharmacology, counseling practice, theoretical base of counseling; ethics and professional issues. Sample test questions will be Included as well as material to enhance your test taking skills.  7 CEU

Paul Weatherly is currently the director of the ALDAC program at BCC since 1999. He has been teaching students how to prepare for the NAADAC exam for the past 10 years. He is also providing workshops on law and ethics to meet the four hour CEU requirement for CDP re-certification where he draws upon his experiences chairing the CDP advisor committee for DOH. This year's focus is newly passed legislation requiring health professionals to report issues of impairment that may cause a fellow provider to put at risk the safety and welfare of patients as well as required reporting ofviolations related to the Uniform Disciplinary Act. Finally he is offering one of his favorite workshops, helping counselors to understand how to teach the value of spirituality in the recovery process to patients who are resistant or reluctant to address issues related to the mind, body and spirit.

ADIS Instructor Training
This 15 hour workshop is designed to meet Division of Alcohol and Substance Abuse guidelines for the training and certification of Alcohol/Drug Information School instructors. Workshop participants will be given all the information necessary to purchase the instructor’s guide and ADIS participant workbooks, however neither of these will be supplied in class. Upon completion, student’s names will be submitted for certification as ADIS instructors. 15 CEU

Paula Frederick is the program manager at Friends of Youth in Issaquah. She is a licensed mental health counselor and CDP. Her work in the field of addiction treatment has spanned the last 20+ years. Paula utilizes her academic background (MA in education) to teach participants how to effectively present and teach the materials presdented in an alcohol drug information school class. Participants will spend the first day learning how to teach and the second day teaching sections of the ADIS curriculum using the participant workbook. Paula is a great resource for participants interested in co-occurring illness and treatment with adolescents.

Gambling Addiction Counselor Certification Training
The purpose of this workshop is to provide individuals with the required education to complete certification as gambling addiction counselors. Participants will learn assessment tools, treatment philosophy and treatment methodology. Participants will also be introduced to agencies and locations where they can do supervised work experience hours to complete the gambling addiction counselor certification process. 30 CEU

Donna Whitmire is a nationally certified gambling addiction counselor who has been providing education for individuals interested in being nationally certified in this area of addiction counseling for the past 5 years. She works with each participant to complete the education as well as provides supervision for participants interested in completing the certification process. The information provided in this class is very helpful for CDP's and other counselors to help patients reduce their potential for substituting compulsive gambling for substance using behavior.

Law and Ethics in Review
This four hour review seminar is designed to meet the Chemical Dependency Professional continuing education hour requirement for ethics and law. Students will evaluate some of the most common incidents of unethical and unprofessional conduct reported to the Department of Health and discuss preventative measures agencies and supervisors can utilize to reduce these types of complaints.  4CEU

Abby Bange is a certified nutrition specialist who has just began her journey into the world of CD counseling. She has been providing information on issues related to nutrition to patients in a variety of health care settings for a number of years. She is looking to provide information to CD counselors to help them improve their skills teaching patients about nutrition and healthy eating habits who work with patients in an addiction treatment setting. She is energetic and passionate about helping patients and counselors learn about nutrition.

Spirituality in the Recovery Process
This workshop is designed to examine the role of the recovery process and how the recognition of spiritual practices can facilitate emotional, familial, and physical healing. Participants will explore how spiritual principles outlined in 12 step programs, faith based programs and non-secular clean and sober support programs enhance the process of recovery. This workshop will help counselor’s examine non-threatening methods for introducing clients to simple spiritually based principles. This workshop meets the guidelines for education topic substance abuse and addiction treatment methods for CDP recertification. 7 CEU

George Du Wors is a licensed clinical social worker who has specialized working with patients who are prone to relapse and continued use after completing addiction treatment programs. George has collected his wisdom in his book "White Knuckles and Wishful Thinking". George has been doing presentations at BCC for the past 15 years in the relapse prevention course. Participants enjoy his candor and straight forward approach identifying how patients rationalize being okay with the use of substances post treatment.

Feelings 101: Anger and Resentment
Emotions are a daily aspect of a counselor’s work. Learn the defining characteristics of anger and resentment with the goal of how to assist your client and/or group in living and working with these emotions for their awareness, growth, and recovery.
