Curriculum

The curriculum for the BCC Interior Design degree is carefully constructed to provide a strong foundation of knowledge on which graduates can build a professional career. It is designed to give students both methodologies and skills that can be applied to the wide variety of employment situations that are encompassed within the field of Interior Design. The three-year Associate of Arts in Interior Design degree at BCC is one of the few three-year degrees in the two-year Washington Community College system. As such it is considered to be a First Professional Degree by the design profession.

There are 108 required credits in the Interior Design core and 45 liberal arts credits in the three-year degree, for a total of 157 quarter credit hours. The first year provides a foundation in art, design theory and skills. The second year emphasizes technical skills, including drafting, lettering, rendering and space planning. The third year prepares the student for the workplace through specialized courses and application of skills and theories to interior design problems.

You will need to plan your own schedule each quarter, and many students take longer than three years to complete the degree. It is a good idea to develop a long-range plan that takes into account your personal timetable, work, family and other commitments, and review it with your Advisor. Course descriptions and prerequisites, which should be used along with this advising material, can be found in the current edition of the BCC 2006-07 Online Catalog and on the BCC website. Courses may be offered more than once a year, and may be taken following the guidelines of the hypothetical three year plan once prerequisites have been met.
