BCC’s Basic Skills Lab is a specialized lab designed to support students in improving their basic skills by focusing directly on their needs and allowing for purposeful self-expression.

We serve adult students who lack proficiency in English and native speakers of English who need support with basic academic skills. These include ESL, ABE, GED, and Work First students.

In the Basic Skills Lab:

• Students work at their own pace to practice skills introduced in the classroom.
• Students study and practice vocabulary, basic phonics, pronunciation, spelling, grammar, listening, reading, and conversation skills.

The BSL combines high and low tech approaches to learning.

High-tech:

• Skill-building software programs,
• Keyboarding, basic computer literacy,
• Word processing and resume software.

Low-tech:

• Students use cassette players, workbooks, and language master machines.
• Tutors and students work together one on one or in small groups.

• Help students individually as they work with computer software programs.
• Lead conversation groups.
• Work one-on-one or in small groups with other learning materials.
