2003 a Week@Boeing
a Week@Boeing is a job shadow program, conceived during some brainstorming sessions with WCIT Program Management and members of the WCIT Advisory Board, Walter Beck and Joye Jepson. Jerry Bunce, Boeing Education Relations, was invited to join the a Week@Boeing implementation team, and contribute his considerable expertise and experience in Boeing/Education partnerships. Realizing that first-hand experience with "what it's like on the job" is invaluable to IT curriculum that addresses skill standards directly, the discussion turned on how we could leverage our relationship and provide such an experience for WCIT Master Teachers.

Tapping into the Boeing Technical Excellence Program (Technical Fellowship, Technical Principals), we set about matching WCIT Master Teachers interested in participating with members of the Boeing Technical Fellowship and Technical Principals interested in this mentoring opportunity.

The outcome of this exercise would be benefits accruing to both Boeing and WCIT.
For Boeing:
  • Members of the Technical Fellowship and Technical Principals gain experience in mentoring – a requirement of membership.
  • A more focused and educated population of future IT employees.
  • Acknowledgement of activities by Washington State and NS.
For WCIT:
  • A chance to focus on an industry's IT needs.
  • Lessons for Washington educators to incorporate into their curriculum enhancement.

The "week" was actually two weeks - August 11-15 and August 25-29. We opened the week with a Kick-off meeting, held at the Boeing Eastgate Campus, Monday morning of each week. This was a chance to introduce Boeing mentors to WCIT mentees, present an overview of the program, including Boeing and WCIT expectations, and answer any questions participants may have had. Friday afternoons of each week, Boeing South Park facilities hosted a Wrap-up meeting, wherein WCIT participants presented a brief overview of lessons learned during the week.

An important deliverable for this project is a comprehensive report by the WCIT participants, detailing lessons learned, general observations on tasks assigned, expectations for completion, and techniques and tools used to accomplish tasks (research, teaming, meetings, etc.). Individual reports will be posted to the WCIT web site by mid-September, 2003.(See the 2003 Reports page.)
