Articles of IT Interest- Topic of the Month: IT Network Security |
Concerned about which security education
pathways and certifications students should
seek? There are approximately fourty IT networking-security-related
certifications in the market
today. Currently, the National Workforce Center
for Emerging Technologies (NWCET) and CITE
are engaged in national research efforts to
identify and describe cyber security skills
standards.
To learn more about entry-level to advanced professional
network security related certifications, read
SearchSecurity.com’s
article titled, "Charting
a path through the security certification landscape."
What if a student poses this question, "What security elements
do companies breach the most?" Find the answer in the TechRepublic
article titled, "Learn
the five worst security practices in organizations".
The demand for IT networking professionals to posses knowledge
of security as well as a certification of security is on the rise.
Read the complete article in CertMag.com’s article titled, "Full-Speed
Ahead: The Demand for Security Certification". |
| |
| Entry-level Security Certification |
| CompTIA and the Security+ Certification |
| The CompTIA Security+ certification tests
for security knowledge mastery of an individual with two years on-the-job
networking experience, with emphasis on security. The exam covers
industry-wide topics, including communication security, infrastructure
security, cryptography, access control, authentication, external attack
and operational and organization security. Security+ is an elective
or prerequisite to advanced security certifications. Exam objectives
are available from the CompTIA website. |
| |
| Security+ Teaching Materials Available |
| Are you considering adding IT security
focused classes to your networking program or are you interested in
integrating more hands-on labs to your current course offering? The
National Workforce Center for Emerging Technologies (NWCET) has some
answers for you. As part of the National Science Foundation-CompTIA
CyberSecurity Fast Track Training and Certification Program completed
last fall, participating instructors from across the country developed
a suite of excellent lecture and lab materials aligned with the NWCET
IT CyberSecurity skill standards and with the CompTIA Security+ exam
objectives. The results are a compendium of materials, exercises and
hands-on labs to help broaden your students’ understanding of
security issues. These materials are downloadable from the
NWCET website. |

| Advanced-level Security Certifications |
| 1. SANS (SysAdmin,
Audit, Network, Security) Institute and the Global Information Assurance Certification (GIAC) |
| The SANS Institute was established in
1989 as a cooperative research and education organization for information
security. In 1999, SANS founded GIAC which has allowed thousands of security
professionals to prove their skills and knowledge meet challenging
standards. GIAC offers certifications that address multiple specialty
areas: security essentials, intrusion detection, incident handling,
firewalls and perimeter protection, operating system security, and more. Because
of GIAC's practical focus, a Gartner Group study named GIAC "the
preferred credential" for individuals who have technical security
responsibilities. For more information, visit the SANS website . |

| 2. International
Information Systems Security Certification Consortium (ISC)2 and the CISSP and SSCP Certifications |
| (ISC)² is charged with the responsibility
for maintaining the (ISC)² CBK®, (Common Body of Knowledge)
a compendium of industry best practices for information security,
including those for CISSPs (Certified Information Systems Security
Professional)and SSCPs (Systems Security Certified Practitioner),
certifying the minimum acceptable competence for professionals seeking
to hold various security credentials. The CISSP credential and backing
from the Information Systems Security Association (see next article
below) has achieved international status among companies and security
professionals. CISSP promotes and tests knowledge and learning of
security professionals in 10 specific security domains, including
networking, applications development, physical security, and more.
For more information about these certifications and materials visit
the (ISC)2 website. |

| Information Systems Security Association (ISSA) Provides
Opportunities for Professionals and Students Regionally and Globally |
ISSA is a not-for-profit international
organization of information security professionals and practitioners.
The organization provides education forums, publications, and peer
interaction opportunities that enhance the knowledge, skill, and professional
growth of its members. The Puget Sound Chapter of the ISSA serves
members in Western Washington, offering monthly meetings and other

| New Information Technology AAS
Degree Set to Launch at Green River Community College (GRCC) |
Responding to industry demand
and market conditions, focus group research with employers, and
results of a daylong, DACUM workshop, GRCC is launching a new Information
Technology (IT) AAS degree.
The program offering is expected to be active sometime this summer,
according to Alan Carter, faculty member at GRCC. The coursework
will focus on a broad range of core subjects, providing students
with a balanced, well-rounded knowledge of IT and the opportunity
to pursue specialization in either networking or information assurance.
Topics include Windows servers, Linux servers, PC hardware, networking,
routing, security, project management and wireless networking. Students
will also pursue an emphasis-related work experience project.
In addition, the program will focus on non-IT skills needed by
graduates entering or looking to advance in today’s IT workplace. "There
was a huge focus on soft skills in our data, so I added a customer
service course and a project management course to the degree, as
well as an additional English class and a business class," says
Carter. For more information, contact Alan. |
