                                    12 MONTHS 75% POSITION (30 Hours/Week)

SALARY:                    Range 29:75% of $2,027 - $2,611 per month

JOB SUMMARY:

The Grounds & Nursery Specialist 2 performs skilled gardening work in the maintenance of BCC main campus grounds, landscapes, pathways and parking lots.  Under general supervision, the Grounds 2 personnel also performs skilled tasks requiring knowledge of cultivation, and maintenance of lawn, trees, and ornamental plants, such as pruning, transplanting plant material, and applying chemicals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Physical ability to do required work; lift a minimum of 50lbs.
  • One year of experience or training involving grounds maintenance, plant care, cultivation and landscape installation OR equivalent education/experience.

 

SPECIFIC POSITION REQUIREMENT:

(Applicants must possess the following in order to be considered for the position.)

  • Valid motor vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain one upon employment.
  • Possess Washington State Department of Agriculture certification for pesticide applications, or ability to obtain license within 1 year of employment.

 

CORE COMPETENCIES:

  • Work in adverse conditions: Willing and able to work in adverse conditions such as rain, fog, ice, snow, wind, extreme ambient temperatures (heat or cold), or in small, cramped spaces.
  • Outdoor work: Perform heavy outdoor work in inclement weather.
  • Hand & power tools: Safely operate hand and power tools.
  • Operate grounds equipment: Safely operate tractors, front-end loaders, rotor-tillers and grounds keeping equipment.
  • Yard & garden care: Experience working in yard and garden care, grounds keeping, nursery or closely related field.
  • Follow instructions: Willing and able to follow written and/or oral instructions.
  • Self Management and Teamwork: Must be able to work both individually or within a group.  Support teamwork through open and honest communication in a diverse working environment.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepare soil for planting; plant seed, sod, turf, bulbs, plants, trees, and shrubs
  • Clean, service and maintain tools and equipment, including power equipment
  • Seed, mow, irrigate, sweep, fertilize, top dress, edge, aerate and maintain lawns
  • Install, repair and operate lawn sprinkler systems
  • Transplant seedlings, trees and shrubs and other nursery stock
  • Rake and remove leaves; pull, hoe, and control weeds
  • Prune, spray and fertilize trees, shrubs and ground covers
  • Clean, service and maintain outdoor garbage and recycling receptacles and designated smoking areas
  • Operate power and motorized equipment such as weed trimmers, chain saws, backpack blowers, rototillers, light tractors, front-end loaders, small trucks, lawn mowers, sweepers, aerators, sod cutters and snow blowers
  • Apply pesticides to landscape and/or hardscapes

 

This position is covered by union shop provisions as the result of a majority vote by employees in the bargaining unit.  All employees must either join the Washington Federation of State Employees Local 1488 and pay regular union dues or pay a union representation fee on date of hire as required by the Dept. of Personnel, Higher Ed. Division rules.
