SALARY:                Range 62: $4,453 - $5,841 per month

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Performs senior-level information technology systems specialist work such as designing, acquiring, installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, resolving problems, or providing consultation for complex administrative, instructional, or research computing systems, telecommunication systems, network infrastructure, projects, or operational problems

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Four years of Information Technology experience such as network administration, consulting, analyzing, designing, installing and/or maintaining computer software applications, hardware, telecommunications, or network infrastructure equipment; directing projects; providing customer or technical support in information technology; or administering or supervising staff in information technology analysis, system maintenance, or troubleshooting/problem resolution.

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent phone & customer service communication skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency with:  Microsoft Windows Server 2000/2003,Active Directory, DNS, MS IIS Server, MS ISA Server, MS SQL Server 2005 & T-SQL, MS SharePoint Server 2000/2005,MS Project Server 2003/2007, MS Exchange Server 2003/2007, Network Tools such as backup software, packet sniffing, network intrusion, & MRTG, among others, Switch configuration, management and VLAN setup; and Clustering load balancing, and firewall appliance setup, configuration and maintenance, Enterprise Antivirus Tools
  •  MCSE (2000/2003)
  • Work schedule may require being on call in the evenings and weekends
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to students, staff and faculty of varied ethnicity, ages, backgrounds and abilities and a commitment to a culturally diverse environment

 

CORE COMPETENCIES:

Multiple Server Administration: Provide server administration for 10+ servers.

Enhance Environments: Monitor and enhance operating environments to ensure optimal performance through scripting and registry tweaking.

IT Implementation & Maintenance: Install, test, implement, administer, or maintain systems, applications, equipment, and/or plans.

Security and Firewalls: Develop security policies, guidelines and standards and provide security oversight. Create security intrusion response plans or procedures.

Risk evaluation: Develop risk assessment, disaster recovery plans, procedures and processes.

Intrusion detection: Intrusion detection, response and documentation. Analyze technical and billing reports and logs to detect violations or intrusions.

Resolve Hardware & Software Problems: Support users in resolving software or hardware problems in a telephone help desk position serving 100 or more users/workstations.

Managing Workloads: Effectively organizes multiple assignments, sometimes of a complex nature or involving competing priorities to produce work products that are accurate, thorough, and on time.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Network Administration

  • Designing and Acquiring:  Design multiple server systems, specialized interfaces, file transfers, data gathering and integrator systems, re-configure existing system, build systems to meet required standards, and integrate and certify software/hardware.
  • Installing: Install new servers including controllers, drivers, clusters and rebuild old servers. Resolve complex installation problems including coordinating with vendor, review vendor documentation, create and support processing environments (test, demo, production).
  • Maintaining and Upgrading: Manage server capacities, memories, and page-files on daily demand. Upgrade operating systems and application software hot-fixes and patches. Check daily anti-virus activities. Create new web folders and set permissions to users.
  • Migrating: Migrate data files from old server to new server. Retain or fix permissions according to user security requirements.
  • Backing up and Restoring: Perform daily backup directly or over the network. Coordinate off campus tape storage
  • Troubleshooting and Resolving Problems: Assist Helpdesk personnel in troubleshooting and resolving senior-level problems and issues.
  • Network Operation: Monitor, control and maintain network operations.

 

Staff Help Desk Phone

  • Answer calls, identify customer needs, and collect information accurately and completely using Request Center.
  • Walk users through solutions over the phone, via email or through the use of remote assistance. When unable to solve a problem over the phone, escalate it for a technician to go unto the field.
  • Relay special user requests to the appropriate support personnel

 

Union shop provisions cover this position as the result of a majority vote by employees in the bargaining unit.  All employees must either join the Washington Public Employee’s Association  and pay regular union dues or pay a union representation fee on date of hire as required by the Dept. of Personnel, Higher Ed. Division rules.
