POSITION:                COMPENSATION SPECIALIST (Class Code 119E), Ref. # 008055

SALARY:                    Range 45: $2,935 - $3,841 per month

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

Reporting to the Director of Human Resource Operations the Compensation Specialist will work under general supervision performing a variety of specialized technical and clerical tasks related to administrative exempt/classified/faculty/hourly/student employment, and the human resources information system (HRIS).  The Specialist will perform technical human resource tasks such as explaining and applying human resource rules, policies, regulations or procedures and processing and ensuring the accuracy of human resource documents and records.  The Specialist will review and ensure the accuracy and completeness of new hire information and contracts, maintain the HRIS system for all employees, ensure accuracy and confidentiality of employee records, and create, review and reconcile reports.  He/She will work as a member of a team and will therefore assist in all aspects of the Human Resources office to include customer service, employment, benefits, data entry, confidential filing and clerical duties.  All team members provide back-up for one another.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a focus on human resources, social or organizational behavioral sciences, business, accounting or related field OR equivalent education/experience.

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Proficiency in MS Office, database software and computerized fiscal systems
    • Professional in Human Resources certification (PHR)
    • Prior experience working in a community college or higher education setting
    • Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations
    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse groups and a demonstrated commitment to cultural pluralism

  • Level I Database:  Use database software to develop and maintain records.
  • Level 2 Spreadsheet:  Use spreadsheet software, such as Microsoft Excel, to create and manipulate large or complex spreadsheets, use complex mathematical formulas to calculate data, and link worksheets.  Import data from other sources, filter lists, and create and format charts and graphs.
  • Level 2 Word Processing:  Use word processing software, such as Microsoft Word to create, format, edit, preview, print, and save documents.  Use standard functions to select, edit, copy, paste, format, and spell check text. Create bulleted and numbered lists, indent and align paragraphs, and use bordering and shading features. Create, format, and edit tables, columns, and charts.  Create forms using templates, work with form fields, and format and enhance forms.  Use mail merge to create form letters, modify merged documents, and merge envelopes and labels.
  • Mathematical Skills:  Maintain accurate and complete records of mathematical calculations, recognizing what data is needed to support important findings and conclusions
  • Recordkeeping:  Consistently and accurately document information and/or update records to reflect the most current information and form a complete and understandable account of modifications, decisions, activities and work performed.
  • Trust & Confidentiality:  Develop trust and demonstrate the ability to keep information confidential in order to elicit honest responses and maintain professionalism in all interactions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Interprets, explains and applies human resource rules, policies, regulations or procedures and negotiated agreements
  • Responds to inquiries and resolves problems in areas such as leave administration, compensation, benefits eligibility or calculations, etc.
  • Reviews and ensures the accuracy and completeness of human resource documents such as employee data forms,  eligibility for employment, leave and salary records, benefits enrollment or claim forms, etc.
  • Prepares responses to unemployment inquiries and represents the college for unemployment hearings
  • Analyzes and summarizes data and prepares reports using computerized and/or manual systems; coordinates the maintenance of computerized human resource information or other recordkeeping systems; verifies accuracy of records and documents adjustments; maintains confidential records
  • Conducts training and/or orientation in human resource rules, policies and procedures, employment and benefits
  • Recommends changes in procedures or rules to facilitate effectiveness
  • Analyzes and recommends allocation of positions; analyzes and recommends changes to classifications.

 

Union shop provisions cover this position as the result of a majority vote by employees in the bargaining unit.  All employees must either join the Washington Public Employee’s Association  and pay regular union dues or pay a union representation fee on date of hire as required by the Dept. of Personnel, Higher Ed. Division rules.
