WORLD WIDE WEB VOCABULARY

INTERNET or World Wide Web
The INTERNET is a network of computer servers throughout the world that are linked together.

The World Wide Web is a collection of interconnected sites that reside on the Internet.

People use these terms interchangeably.

SITE
A particular group of web pages created and maintained by a person or group of persons.

WEB ADDRESS or URL
This is the place that is typed in so that a particular site can be found.

BROWSER
Software that allows you to view web pages.
The most common browser is Internet Explorer, which modeled itself on Netscape.
New versions of the browsers come out regularly. Some web sites are so complex that only the newest version of the browser will open them.
The newest (or latest) versions of Internet Explorer range from 5.1 to 6.0.
The newest (or latest) version of Netscape is 7.0.

SEARCH ENGINE
This allows you to search the web for sites on different topics.
The most popular Search Engine is http://www.google.com

HOME PAGE
The Home Page is the main page of a particular site. It tells you, often, how to contact the person or group who produced the site.

LINKS
Links are words that usually are underlined and often in a different color than other words on a page.
A small hand appears on the screen when you move the cursor over the link. When you click on the link, an hourglass takes the place of the hand.

The link takes you to another place on the World Wide Web.

To return from the link to your starting point, click on the Back Button, which is located in the navigation toolbar.

To move quickly up and down the page, put your cursor on the sidebar on the right hand side, press down the left hand button of the mouse, and pull the sidebar up or down.
