NETSCAPE, EBSCHOST AND SEARCH ENGINES - group project
1. Double click on the Netscape icon. (Wait for the words, Document done on the bottom left of the screen.)
2. Find the BCC home page: At the top of the screen, you will find the Web address, a URL, starting with "
http://".
Delete the entire line and type into the box, http://www.bcc.ctc.edu/ and hit the return key.
What do you think the ".edu" ending indicates?
Find Ebscohost by looking at the Library Media Center page; then Periodical Articles.
You want to find information about Management Science (the broad term for the topics we have been studying in class). Using search techniques and Boolean logic, list three search terms or combinations of search terms; try them in Ebscohost, and list how many matches you found with each:
3. Sometimes you can guess what a site's address is. For example, to find Time Magazine, type in
http://www.time.com/ and hit the return key.
What do you think the .com ending indicates?
What is the cover story for this week's issue of Time Magazine?
What do you think would be the address of the Seattle Times?
Find the Seattle Times site and list one of today's top stories.
4. Delete the words at the top and type in
http://www.irs.gov/
What is this site?
What do you think .gov means when it's part of an address?
What do you think the address for the Bureau of Labor Statistics would be?
Find it on the web and list one of the options found on the Bureau of Labor Statistics
home page:
5. At the top of the screen locate the Net Search button and click on it. You will notice buttons for several Search Engines: Alta Vista, Lycos, Excite, Yahoo, and Infoseek, among others.
Start with Yahoo by clicking on it.
Search for Euler Circuits by typing it in and hitting the return key.
How many matches did you find?
Search for "EulerCircuits". How many matches did you find?
6. Try another Search Engine, Infoseek: Click on Net Search at the top of your screen.
Search for Euler Circuits with this search engine. How many matches did you find?
Search for "Euler Circuits" with this search engine. How many matches did you find?
7. How did the two search engines compare?
