Below you will find a list of local organizations that offer students opportunities to serve in their community. You may choose an organization by course type, or simply browse the list to fit your individual needs.

Anthropology of Linguistics

Women's Refugee Alliance (ReWA)

The Refugee Women's Alliance is a nonprofit, multi-ethnic organization that promotes inclusion, independence, personal leadership and strong communities by providing refugee and immigrant women and families with culturally appropriate services.

International Rescue Committee

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is the leading nonsectarian, non-profit, voluntary organization providing ongoing relief, protection, and resettlement services for refugees worldwide who are the victims of oppression and persecution, or uprooted by war, violence, and famine.

Criminology

4C Coalition

The 4C Coalition is a core partner in Seattle/King County Reclaiming Futures Project. The 4C Coalition was formed in 1999 for the purpose of providing 1) mentors to youth, 2) church and community resources to the families of these youth and 3) a united voice to the community and government agencies to educate and effectively address youth issues. The 4C provides mentors to youth who are participating in the King County Reclaiming Futures Project.

Service Learning opportunities:

The 4C Coalition Mentor Program recruits, trains and retains mentors for juveniles (14 to 19) transitioning from the juvenile justice system.Make a one year commitment to help a young person. Time commitment averages 2-3 hours a week. Basic requirement is to make contact weekly. Volunteers will learn about the juvenile justice system

 

Justice Works

Justice Works! is a grassroots criminal justice reform organization. The Mission of Justice Works is Undoing racism in the criminal justice system as experienced by African Americans. Its Areas of Focus are Court System Accountability, Dismantling the profit motive for incarceration, and prisoner reentry support.

Service Learning Opportunities:

Working on the development of correspondence courses for incarcerated people
Research and planning to assist with the transition of formerly incarcerated people back in to civilian life.
Research of available legal resources for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people
Assisting formerly incarcerated people with resume development and job searching

Auburn Police Department

Service Learning Opportunity:

Domestic violence witness/victim support team. Volunteers will join staff for overnight and weekend on-call shifts and assist in supporting witnesses and victims. Volunteers will also be able to join educational classes about domestic violence for free.

Assist with criminal justice system in courts. Assist as staff work with a client through the trial process. Help with the safety plan for victims.

This accepting atmosphere cultivates respect and dignity by empowering people to use their individual talents in an altruistic way. Volunteers at The Giving Tree recognize and expand their talents by creating unique crafts that are either sold to the public or donated to children in need.

Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust

The Greenway, which runs from Seattle east along Interstate 90, is not this way by accident. It would have been easy for the highway to be lined with shopping malls, parking lots and housing developments instead of the lush forests that are there today. Fortunately the Greenway Trust has convened a remarkable coalition of people to protect this scenic and recreational landscape. Now the future of the Mountains to Sound Greenway lies in the hands of hundreds of volunteers each year who work to keep this landscape healthy for its current residents and future generations.

Catholic Community Services works to support and maintain the dignity of the individual within the family, and the dignity of the family within the community. Catholic Community Services East King County Family Center supports a number of programs on the Eastside that offer service opportunities.

Service Learning Opportunity:

Volunteer Chores Services (VCS) is one program of Catholic Community Services. It is the largest social service provider in the state of Washington. VCS is state-wide, and provides chore services free of charge to elders over age 60 and adults with disabilities over age 18. There are flexible income guidelines for recipients and services are dependent on availability of volunteers.
