Ethnic and Cultural Studies at BCC

As a subject, ethnic and cultural studies is the comparative analyses of racial and ethnic groups, interpretations of cultural practices, examination of biases, and exploration of a vision of a “multiculturally intelligent” society, with heightened awareness of embedded beliefs and stereotypes regarding race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, and disability. The Ethnic and Cultural Studies Department at BCC offers courses in race in the United States; white culture in United States; women's studies; Asian American Studies; the literature of indigenous cultures; and ethnic experiences in art & music. Most of these provide credits to fulfill the social science distribution requirement for BCC's degree programs and transfer to Washington State four-year institutions as social science credit. Some transfer only as humanities credit or only as science credit. For more information about our courses, distribution requirements, special offerings, and links to some of the faculty who teach the courses, see our course catalog.
